Incident Type: Structure Fire
At 0816 hrs. the Town of Stratford 911 Center received a telephone report of a stove fire located at 2074/2076 Barnum Avenue which is a two family residence. Upon arrival of the fire department at 0821 hrs, Stratford Engine 1 reported heavy smoke and fire issuing from a side first floor window of the structure. The fire involved the first floor kitchen of the structure with heavy smoke and heat damage occurring throughout, and heavy smoke damage affecting the second floor apartment. All occupants were determined to be out of structure after Stratford firefighters searched the structure. The fire under the command of Assistant Chief Michael Camperlengo was declared under control at 0852 hrs. Due to the extent of the fire, United Illuminating crews were summoned to the scene to cut power. The American Red Cross, Bridgeport Chapter was also summoned to the scene to provide temporary housing for the displaced residents. The owner of the structure according to Stratford Tax Assessor’s records is listed as Jamie-Acosta Refugio. No injuries were sustained by occupants or firefighters. The cause of the fire was determined by the Stratford Fire Marshal as a gas stove compromised by a family pet chewing on the stove wiring.
Four Engines, 1 Rescue, 1 Tower Ladder, Assistant Chief/Shift Commander, 1 Captain/Safety Officer, and 2 fire marshal investigators responded to the scene for a total of 25 Stratford firefighters. Stratford Ems and PD also responded to the scene for incident support services.
Both Milford Fire, and Bridgeport Fire sent apparatus to Stratford Fire Headquarters to cover any additional incidents in Stratford.
