School Programs
The Friends of Boothe Memorial Park volunteers provide experienced docents who guide school children through a day of life on an 19th century farm. The children are placed in small groups which visit six different stations, each of which exposes them to some aspect of life on the farm. Since the experience is all "hands on" activities, they may cook some pancakes using freshly ground wheat and hours old eggs, or make their own apple cider, or fresh sausages. Each child takes a hand weaving a rag rug on the old loom in the barn, while their classmates are learning about home life without electricity, or taking a hand carding wool from our sheep. The blacksmith shop offers the tools of the trade and how to use them, and all of the children are exposed to the farm through threshing and grinding wheat as well as a chance to feed the chickens and sheep. It is a fun day for all and an experience which they remember many years later. Unfortunately, we are booked through 2014 in both the spring and fall sessions. For any information on the program, please call (203) 381-2046.
