Refuse Regulations

The Town of Stratford no longer sells recycle bins. Residents may use a regulation 32 gallon container for recycling.  The can or container must be clearly marked "RECYCLING".             

 

ALL MATERIAL MUST BE CONTAINED IN REGULATION CANS OR BAGS AND PLACED CURBSIDE PRIOR TO 6:30 A.M. ON THE DAY OF COLLECTION.

 

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE:

  • Garbage must be contained in standard 32-gallon cans with handles and covers, or in plastic garbage bags with ties. Refuse contained in 45 gallon cans will NOT be collected.
  • The combined weight of the container and the refuse shall not exceed 75 pounds.
  • Collection is made on a weekly basis. 

YARD WASTE:

  •  Grass, leaves and shrubbery clippings must be contained in brown kraft yard waste bags or loosely in cans. 
  • Branches no larger than an inch in diameter and 4 feet in length will be collected if tied in bundles.
  • Collection is seasonal and is made every other week on the day AFTER recycling collection.

RECYCLABLES:

 What can I recycle through the single stream system?

  • Paper (newspaper, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, envelopes) - no bundling required!
  • Clean cardboard and boxboard (cracker boxes, pasta boxes, shoe boxes and other similar materials) - no bundling required!
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Paper bags
  • Office and school papers
  • Empty glass jars and bottles
  • Aluminum cans and clean foil
  • Empty tin and steel cans, including aerosol cans (no paint, pesticide or herbicide cans, please)
  • All plastic containers labeled #1 and #2
  • All other plastic food, beverage, soap and shampoo containers labeled #3, #4, #5, #6, and #7

BE GREEN - ALL containers should be empty and clean!
What is not recyclable through the single stream system?

  • Garbage
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic utensils
  • Food waste
  • Food-tainted items (used paper plates or boxes, paper towels or paper napkins
  • Polystyrene or Styrofoam
  • Motor oil bottles
  • Hazardous chemical containers
  • Plastic toys or sorting goods
  • Electronics or batteries
  • Compact discs or DVDs
  • Light bulbs
  • Yard waste or garden tools
  • Pots and pans
  • Plastic toys or sporting goods
  • Wax or plastic-coated cardboard
  • Medicine or medication bottles
  • Tyvek or similar envelopes

THE TOWN WILL NOT PICK UP THE FOLLOWING:

  • household garbage or recycling contained in paper or cardboard boxes
  • loose garbage
  • liquid waste
  • human or animal waste
  • ashes
  • paint in cans
  • drained oil or hazardous material
  • any item too large to be contained in a regulation garbage can or bag
  • yard waste contained in plastic bags 

TRANSFER STATION

The Transfer Station is located on Watson Blvd (off Lordship Blvd) and is open Monday-Friday 7:00AM-3:00PM and on Saturday 8:00AM-12:00PM. Residents can bring up to 250 lbs of household refuse per month, free of charge.
