âś…Thursday: 5:30 am to 9 pm

Here are some tips on how to stay cool:

âś…Stay in air-conditioned environments as much as possible. If you must be outdoors, try to limit your outdoor activity to the morning and evening.

âś…Try to rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to cool off.

âś…Find an air-conditioned cooling center. See the list of Stratford Cooling Centers above, and if needed, call 2-1-1 for a list of cooling centers in other municipalities. Do not rely on a fan as your only cooling device.

âś…Avoid direct sunlight.

âś…Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.

âś…Take cool showers or baths.

âś…Check on those most at-risk several times a day.

âś…Pets that cannot be brought indoors should be provided with ready access to water and shade to keep them cool. Do not leave pets unattended in vehicles.

Remember to stay hydrated. Since your body loses fluids through sweat, you can become dehydrated in extreme heat. Here are some tips to avoid dehydration:

âś…Drink more water than usual.

✅Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids.

âś…Drink two to four cups of water every hour while working or exercising outside.

âś…Avoid alcohol or liquids containing high amounts of sugar.

Remind others to drink enough water.

Residents who need additional resources, such as overnight sheltering, transportation assistance or other social services, should call 2-1-1 or visit www.211ct.org for statewide cooling center information. If you or anyone is experiencing a heat-related emergency or any other emergency, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.
